Natural Deodorants vs. Chemical Deodorants: What’s the Difference?

Natural Deodorants vs. Chemical Deodorants: What’s the Difference?

Are there actually effective natural deodorants? Do natural deodorants work the same as (or even better than) chemical deodorants? And most importantly, do natural deodorants last as long? These are questions a lot of people may ask themselves when switching from traditional deodorants to their natural counterparts.

If you’re willing to exchange your over-the-counter deodorant for natural alternatives but are still a little skeptical, this article is for you.

Natural Deodorants vs. Chemical Deodorants: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to the chemical deodorants you get at the drugstore, the predominant active ingredient is aluminum -- both in traditional and stronger formulas. Although there’s no evidence that aluminum exposure causes cancer and other illnesses, it’s a substance that can build up in your body. In this case, if you’d rather stick to 100% natural ingredients, you’re better off avoiding aluminum altogether.

Chemical deodorants also may contain parabens, a type of preservative used in a range of cosmetic products. According to scientific studies, parabens can be harmful to hormones and contribute to infertility. As for more superficial effects, parabens may cause skin irritation in some people. Not to mention, some people may be allergic to the synthetic fragrances present in traditional deodorants.

On the other hand, natural deodorants are 100% natural, cruelty-free, and free from all of the aforementioned chemicals. All of the certified organic ingredients are carefully sourced from Asia, and instead of synthetic scents, the product’s natural fragrances come from pure essential oils.

But, as you may know, aluminum is a powerful sweat and odor-blocking ingredient. That probably means deodorants without aluminum aren’t that effective, right?

Wrong.

Most natural deodorants are able to attain 12-hour long effectiveness thanks to their primary active ingredient for super-strength: baking soda. Baking soda is an ideal natural deodorant thanks to its alkaline nature, which neutralizes the acids present in the sweat. Remember that perspiration doesn’t smell -- bacteria does. Sweaty areas start to smell when the bacteria on your skin starts metabolizing your sweat. Nautural deodorant acts as a shield by balancing your body’s microbiome and counteracting naturally-occurring sweat and odor.

Additionally, pregnant and breastfeeding women are often instructed to avoid harsh chemicals due to a stronger need for hormonal balance. If you’re pregnant and unsure about the provenance of your antiperspirants, give natural deodorants a try.

Truth is, the chemical deodorants sitting on your bathroom countertop may contain a lot of chemicals you’re unfamiliar with. If you’re uncomfortable with the prospect of using potentially dangerous chemicals, rest easy: super-strength 100% natural deodorants will bring you the same effective results, minus the irritants and dangers.
